    ABC Apprenticeship Trustee Academy Agenda

    In order to help trustees of ABC Apprenticeship Trusts uphold the highest standards of fiduciary leadership, as well as meet their continuing development needs, Associated Builders and Contractors is excited to introduce a new opportunity for 2018. The inaugural ABC Apprenticeship Trustee Academy will provide new and current apprenticeship trustees with the knowledge and tools to effectively lead the essential programs that develop our future construction professionals. In addition to world class trustee development, the ABC Apprenticeship Trustee Academy provides the unique opportunity to network with fellow merit-shop trustees from across the association and witness the premiere craft competition in the construction industry at ABC’s National Craft Championships.

    Wednesday, March 21

    8:30 - 9:45 a.m. 

    Basic laws governing Apprenticeship Programs and Core Competencies for Trustees

    This introductory session will outline the basic legal ground rules governing ABC apprenticeship programs, including 29 C.F.R. Parts 29 and 30, and an overview of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act’s applicability to ABC’s multiple employer apprenticeship programs. Attendees will also learn the basic fiduciary obligations of a trustee.


    10 - 11:30 a.m.

    Advanced Fiduciary Obligations and Plan Administration

    Building off the content of ERISA Basics, attendees will get a deeper understanding of specific fiduciary realities that are specific to ABC-affiliated apprenticeship programs. These topics include selecting and monitoring service providers with special emphasis on the ABC chapter as a service provider. Additionally, attendees will learn about compliance remedies such as the U.S. Department of Labor’s Voluntary Fiduciary Correction Program.

    12 - 3 p.m.

    Lunch and National Craft Championship Viewing

    Craft trainees from chapter and member training programs compete for the gold in 15 competitions, representing 12 crafts. Join us in the Exhibit Hall for lunch and a front row seat to the best-of-the-best in the construction industry.

    8:30 - 9:45 a.m.

    Best Practices For Day-to-Day Operations of ABC Apprenticeship Trusts

    Attendees will learn from an experienced former Chapter president how Chapters and Apprenticeship Trusts should interact with each other and with state and federal regulators on a day-to-day basis. The focus will be on best practices and the role of staff and trustees.

    10:15 - 11:30 a.m.

    Panel Discussion: Surviving an ERISA Audit

    Compliance practitioners and chapter experts will share their experiences and best practices for surviving an ERISA audit of your apprenticeship trust. Topics include record-keeping practices and administrative policies and on red flags that can easily be remedied by of planning and oversight.
